In the greenhouse, growing of vegetables takes place year-round in order for produce donations to be made to Mary's Soup Kitchen. The microgreens that we grow occasionally serve as direct food donations as well.
First, our 1 Square Yard Challenge involves collecting and delivering of produce grown by our student volunteers Secondly, we hold seasonal can drives. Lastly, damaged produce or gleaning events at local farms are held to benefit the soup kitchens.
The majority of our income comes from weekly microgreen sales to homebuyers in restaurants in the area. However, Farmers' market and other fundraising events are held throughout the year selling various plants, seed paper, seeds and more!
Our square yard challenge takes place in the spring, first started March 2021. Students across Eastern North Carolina take home vegetable seedlings started in the greenhouse to plant in their own backyards. Once the produce is ready to be harvested though the late spring and summer season, Carolina Greens's student volunteers will pick up the produce and deliver it to either Mary's Soup Kitchen of Kinston or Joy Soup Kitchen of Greenville, NC.
There are 3 main ways to get involved.
1. Help us grow through the 1 Square Yard Challenge
2. Become a customer of our produce and microgreens
3. Donate to support our cause
Hand designed by the student board, our cards were sold for $2 each. We raised around $200 to donate to Mary’s Soup Kitchen.
